President Jovenel Moise will not make the trip to New York for the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, according to a statement released on Monday evening.
He was supposed to leave on Sunday but had previously said his departure was postponed pending the installation of a new government.
Earlier on Monday, several hundred protesters flooded the streets of the capital to express their frustration with Moise, setting up barricades along their path, demanding him to step down.
Moise has dispatched his foreign minister, Edmond Bocchit, in his place to the United Nations this week.
