Haiti is the safest destination in the Caribbean, 4th safest in the Caribbean and Central America,, according to the GPI rankings that were released Thursday.
Haiti is ranked 4th place behind Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua. It is followed by Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago (respectively 5th, 6th And 7th place).
The GPI, issued annually by the Sydney-based non-profit Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) since 2007, ranks 163 countries that account for 99.7% of the world's population.
“The world has become slightly more peaceful compared to the previous year, with an average increase in peace of 0.28 %. 93 countries had improved their peace levels, while 68 countries had deteriorated and the gap between the more modest and the more peaceful countries had increased.”
The index gauges global peace by taking into account 23 factors within three main domains.
The level of safety and security in society, the extent of domestic or international conflict, and the degree of militarization.
