Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council has named Garry Conille to return to the position during the government’s transition period, council president Edgard Leblanc Fils said on Tuesday.
The U.N. development specialist was chosen by consensus after the council conducted hearings of candidates, Leblanc Fils said.
Garry Conille, said Wednesday that he was “very honored” to be chosen for the post, in his first statement.
Conille thanked the civil society groups, political parties and members of the Haitian diaspora who proposed him as a candidate.
“Together, we will work for a better tomorrow for all the children of our nation,” he wrote on X, the social media platform, in Haitian Creole.
Garry Conille briefly served as prime minister from 2011 to 2012 during the presidency of Michel Martelly.
He is currently the UNICEF Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
