The Haitian Government should eliminate fuel subsidies but do so gradually and help cushion the effects to avoid the kind of unrest that erupted last week when abrupt price hikes were announced.
“International Monetary is working with Haiti to revise its agreement”. IMF spokesperson Gerry Rice said on Thursday at a briefing.
The new agreement will include “compensatory” social programs aimed at mitigating the impacts on the Haitian people, Rice said.
“The Haitian government recognized that general fuel subsidies put a significant strain on Haiti’s fiscal accounts,” Rice said.
