Haiti Bans foreign currency in Trade Activities

The Haitian government has introduced new restrictions on the use of the foreign currency, in what appears to be a fresh attempt to halt a slide in the value of its own currency, the Gourde.

According to local media reports, the government has decided that all transactions made in Haiti will now be made, necessarily in the national currency which is the Gourde,. "It is forbidden to claim from anyone the payment in foreign currency or its equivalent in gourde for transactions whose settlement takes place in the territory", said the decree. The Government also allows all citizens to denounce and file a complaint against anyone who asks them to pay from a currency other than the gourde.
