Guy Philippe was sentenced on Wednesday to nine years in a U.S. prison in connection with an international narcotics scheme centered on Miami and elsewhere across America.
Forty-nine-year-old Guy Philippe will also be ordered to pay a $1.5 million judgement. Prosecutors said Philippe took cash payments from drug sales between 1999 and 2003.
Philippe, who was also an elected Haitian senator, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga of the Southern District of Florida after he previously pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
He was accused of using his position with the Haitian National Police to provide protection for drug-related proceeds arriving into Haiti in exchange for cash payments.
