President Jovenel Moise has said he "will not leave the country in the hands of armed gangs and drug traffickers", amid continuing protests.
He broke his silence on national television address after a week of violence in which at least nine people have been killed.
Moise said in his address that he had taken measures to improve the lives of Haitians, urging patience for reforms to take effect.
"I heard the voice of the people. I know the problems that torment them. That's why the government has taken a lot of measures," Moise said. "I asked the prime minister to come and explain them and implement them without delay in order to relieve misery."
He has reportedly called for dialogue with the opposition, to no avail.
Protesters appeared unmoved by the president’s speech and some were back on the streets shortly after.
