Haiti has announced a slight minimum wage increase for garment workers that falls well short of their demands, prompting union calls for a strike.
President Jovenel Moise said late Thursday that the minimum pay will rise from the current level of 300 gourdes ($4.75) per day to 350 gourdes ($5).
The union is demanding 800 gourdes (nearly $13) for an eight-hour day, saying workers are unable to live on what they earn now.
Union members said they will launch a week-long strike Monday.
